The lead member of the group, who calls himself the "Dark Defender," said it is like a neighborhood watch, but with superhero flair to it.

Gearing up in black and white camo, motocross armor, topical vest, and a scanner, the Dark Defender said, "The main goal is to be involved in the community, to help out in the community."

The group of seven or eight do safety patrols, homeless outreach, and anti-crime campaigns.

"This day and age, it can be a very dark world, depending on where you live, but still even if you're in a safe area, you never know what is going to happen from one moment to the next," said the "Dark Defender."

Their uniforms are based on their favorite superhero. The Dark Defender's is a mix between Captain America and Batman.

The group wants to continue to make a difference and cut down on crime in Harrisonburg.

"We plan to be around as long as it takes," said the "Dark Defender."
