SAFETY SERVICES UNIT (S.S.U.)

The S.S.U. is a Unit (or "program") for individuals 18 years and up who want to participate in Safety part of the J.A.I. The safety patrols started in January of 2012 and continued on ever since.

The purpose of these patrols is to reduce crime by making a presence on the streets. This particular unit takes to the streets equipped with everything that's needed to respond to a critical incident.  During these patrols, used needles, misc. paraphernalia, and any other unsafe items are removed and destroyed. On an average patrol, it is common for the unit to break up fights, contact EMS for distressed persons, and provide first aid.

This Unit will occasionally scout out homeless encampments and other homeless hangouts and provide information to our Outreach Services Unit. During cold weather, welfare checks are done on people who are potentially at risk of injury or even death. But Safety Patrols aren't the only thing we do in this unit, we also do other things like:

  • Safety Escorts
  • Anti-Crime Campaigns
  • Security Services (When asked)
  • Support Patrols (A special patrol in Support of someone who has passed on and supporting the family)
  • Graffiti Removal, etc.
